New Zealand's population officially reached 4 million at 5.35pm today.

The milestone was signalled by the online population clock at Statistics New Zealand, which uses a formula to calculate the population based on the estimated resident population at 31 December 2002.

Statistics New Zealand says the country's population increases by one person every six minutes and 48 seconds.
