Northlanders are being urged to 'get ready' ahead of a national civil defence preparedness week in the wake of a series of storms which have battered the region this year.
The annual Get Ready Week, which runs from September 21 to 27, is aimed at encouraging people to think abouthow they would handle natural disasters and other hazards.
The theme this year is 'What would you do?'
In Northland the Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Groups will be posting daily messages and challenges on its Facebook page, as well as asking people to share their best tips for coping with events like the recent storms which caused widespread flooding in the region.
Councillor Paul Dimery, who sits on the Northland CDEM committee, said locals "need to be proactive not apathetic".
"Being prepared for all eventualities is what makes Kiwis' 'can do' attitude," he said.
"Everyone has their own special abilities which can be utilised to prepare, respond and recover from a Civil Defence emergency. Please take the time to utilise those unique skills so that we can all get through."
