Supermarkets across Auckland are starting to receive loaves of bread missing from shelves for days, although some stores are still running bare.

A “production issue” at Goodman Fielder’s commercial Auckland bakery on Sunday has had downstream effects on the city’s bread supply, causing shortages in supermarkets and dairies across the wider region.

A Goodman Fielder spokesperson said yesterday that the bakery had since begun “operating at full capacity”, with supply “expected to return to normal from tomorrow”.

A Foodstuffs spokesperson has since told the Herald that deliveries are back to normal, with “more lines and more stock available from this afternoon” after the supply issue was fixed.

“We apologise to customers if their favourite loaf hasn’t been available recently, and they can look forward to enjoying it again fairly soon,” the spokesperson said.

The Herald visited New World and Woolworths in Pt Chevalier this morning, where notices on Sunday originally warned shoppers of low Vogel’s stock.

While a limited supply of Vogel’s had returned to Woolworths’ shelves, all Goodman Fielder bread brands – including Molenberg, Nature’s Fresh and Freya’s – were still missing from New World.

Updated notices warned shoppers of ongoing supply issues and said the disruptions would continue for an undisclosed period.

“Due to a production issue, Quality Baker [a subsidiary of Goodman Fielder] bread will be out of stock until further notice from the supplier,” a poster at New World Pt Chevalier read, citing Vogel’s, Nature’s Fresh and Freya’s as among the brands affected.

Similarly, a notice at Woolworths Pt Chevalier acknowledged Goodman Fielder’s bread supply had been interrupted.

“Due to mechanical issues, Goodman Fielder products are currently unavailable in all retailers across the greater Auckland region,” it read.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and are working with the manufacturer to return to a regular supply of Goodman Fielder products across our stores as soon as these issues are fixed.”

Several Pak’nSave stores in Auckland are also continuing to advise shoppers of the ongoing shortage.

A spokesperson for Goodman Fielder said yesterday that its local bakery experienced an unspecified production issue over the weekend, “which temporarily disrupted the supply of some breads, buns and rolls, across parts of the North Island”.

“This was a supply disruption only, and there are no food safety or quality concerns with any products,” the spokesperson said.

The nature of their bakery’s production issue wasn’t disclosed, yet the spokesperson apologised to customers for the disruption and thanked them for their patience.

George Weston Foods, the producer of bread brands such as Tip Top, Burgen and Ploughman’s, told the Herald the matter was unrelated to its brand.

On Monday, a Woolworths NZ spokesperson said its Auckland stores had been “impacted by a supply issue of Vogel’s bread on Sunday, March 8″.

At the time, Woolworths NZ said it expected the issues would be resolved yesterday and thanked customers for their “support and patience”.
