No foul play in death of schizophrenia patient

The sudden death of a Christchurch schizophrenia sufferer could have been linked to the side-effects of antipsychotic drugs, an inquest is examining.

Daniel James Warburton, 37, was found dead on the patio of his Christchurch flat by his father on May 2, last year.

In the days before his death he had complained to his parents that he'd been vomiting and feeling unwell.

An inquest into the invalid beneficiary's death began at Christchurch District Court today.

Police said there was no suggestion of foul play.

The inquest heard that Warburton was being medicated with Clozapine, an antipsychotic used to treat severe schizophrenia.

Dr Jane Hetherington, medical director of Linwood Medical Centre where Warburton was a patient, said he was subject to intensive monitoring by community mental health services.

She said Clozapine is prescribed and monitored by specialists and her practice's role in regards to his mental health was limited.

Hetherington told the inquest that GPs were not aware of the side effects of Clozapine.

The inquest, before Coroner Brigitte Windley, continues.
