Police investigating yesterday's sudden death of a 17-month-old Invercargill infant are today remaining tight-lipped about their inquiries.

The death happened at a house in Wallacetown, north of Invercargill yesterday, according to a short police statement.

Today, forensic officers and detectives are carrying out a scene examination of the property.

A cordon remains around the house.

But police are not giving any further details.

They refused to answer a series of questions from NZME News Service today, including whether the infant is a boy or a girl or whether the death is being considered as suspicious.

"At this time, police will not be making any further information public as it may prejudice our current lines of inquiries," a spokesman said.

St John ambulance refused to comment yesterday, referring inquiries to police.

The police spokesman hoped more information will be released later in the week.
