Love story wins Katherine Mansfield award

Wellington's Janis Freegard has won the Katherine Mansfield Award for her short story about a Taranaki girl who moves to the capital and falls in love. She wins $5000 and a print of a Bennet-Alder miniature of Mansfield for Mill.

Runner-up was Tracy Farr, of Wellington, for The Blind Astronomer. Tracey Slaughter, of Thames, won the novice writers' award for Her First and the young writers' award went to 17-year-old Susan Johnston, of Mt Eden, for True Colours, which takes a keyhole look at family life.
