George Simon has been sacked as race commentator for the Singapore Turf Club and is returning to New Zealand.
Simon had just returned from a holiday in New Zealand to be told his three-year contract had been terminated with six months to run.
"The worst thing is they refused to
tell me why," a shocked Simon told the Herald last night.
"It's frustrating when you can't counter any claims made against you, but they told me under the terms of my contract they were not obligated to provide me with reasons. I asked if it was anything to do with my performance and they said no."
Simon said he suspected a couple of individuals had actively campaigned to have him removed.
The former New Zealand racecaller and TAB Trackside presenter said he was disappointed the sacking will always be a black mark against his career.
"And I lose the bonus entitlements which would have come at the end of 36 months.
"I'm gutted, but I'm also philosophical about the outcome."
Simon is in the process of tidying up a few personal details and will return to New Zealand next week.
"I don't know what I'll do, but it might be time for a career change.
"One thing I'm pleased about is that I know calling and presenting up here has made me a better racing broadcaster. I know I made a valuable contribution to racing in Singapore."
