Horowhenua lakeside planting recognised

The Lake Horowhenua Trust has won a conservation award for replanting native plants around the lake.

The award was presented in Parliament by Conservation Minister Sandra Lee, recognising what is the largest iwi-managed conservation project in the country.

Trust chairman Matt McMillan said the award was just recognition for the work of many people in the area.

"It has been a pretty hard slog over the last eight years, and we have had a lot of help from the community," he said. "This award gives some tangible recognition of our efforts."

While a huge amount of planting had been done around the lake, there was still much work to come, said Mr McMillan.

"We have 700,000 trees left to plant."

The next task for the trust is to press on with a walkway around the lake.
