Margaret Hayward, a biographer of former Labour Prime Minister Norman Kirk, is Labour's Rangitikei candidate for this year's election. Miss Hayward, aged 61, was the only nomination at a meeting in Feilding.
She was the first woman appointed a private secretary at Parliament after she began working for Mr Kirk in 1967, when he was Leader of the Opposition. After he died in 1974 she wrote Diary of the Kirk Years.
Rangitikei is held by 14th-ranked National MP and industrial relations spokesman Simon Power with a majority of 289.
Miss Hayward is now a researcher and PhD student at Victoria University.
