Detectives investigating the murder of Hawkes Bay farmer Jack Nicholas have issued descriptions of six vehicles and occupants and are appealing for more information.
Police also want to hear from a man who went to the Bay View police station, about 10km north of Napier, about 6.30pm on the night of the shooting, August 27, asking to see the constable, who was out.
Mr Nicholas, 71, was shot dead about 6.30am outside his farmhouse at Puketitiri, northwest of Napier.
Inquiry chief Detective Inspector Godfrey Watson said the vehicles might have been in the area legitimately. They are:
* A Leyland bus, painted mainly purple with some grey, with a trail bike winch on the back. The male occupant, who may have been hunting in the area, was a solidly built European in his late 50s with grey hair and moustache.
* A Jeep Cherokee or Toyota 4x4, burgundy or green. It was in a near-accident on Glengarry Rd about 100m from the Napier-Taupo road on August 27. A male occupant.
* A metallic blue 4x4 utility. Seen about 7.25am at the corner of Glengarry Rd and the Napier-Taupo road. Chunky tyres, canopy and tinted windows. Male occupant.
* A silver vehicle, seen about 7.15am on Puketitiri Rd near Seafield Rd. No other information.
* A silver hatchback, seen speeding on Swamp Rd about 7.30am. Three male Maori occupants.
* A Jeep, black or dark green 4-door. Seen about 8am on Puketitiri Rd between Balls Clearing and Makahu. Driver in mid-50s with dark hair.
