Police have released the name of a Czech presumed drowned after being swept away at Waimarama Beach, Hawke's Bay on Sunday.

He is Roman Miculka, aged 23.

Searches yesterday failed to turn up any sign of Mr Miculka, and further shoreline searches were to be carried out at low tide today.

Mr Miculka entered New Zealand on February 23 on a visitor's permit.

Lifeguards were alerted to Mr Miculka's disappearance on Sunday afternoon by a fellow Czech, who he had been boogie boarding with.

The pair had been boarding on a part of the beach 500m north of the patrolled area. Sea conditions were rough, with surf ranging from 1.5 to two metres.

Mr Miculka's companion noticed the man was missing when his boogie board was washed ashore.
