Thursday night's two-hour finale of American Idol attracted 684,000 Kiwi viewers who tuned in to watch big Ruben Studdard win the title from Clay Aiken.
That topped the 500,000 who watched Wednesday night's semifinal and its big numbers made Idol roughly as popular as Coronation Street to New Zealand viewers. In the US, 33.7 million watched the talent quest's ending and cast more than 24 million votes. Plans for a third American Idol are under way.
