Three flotillas of boaties are standing by to stage a nuclear-free protest against a vessel carrying 255kg of plutonium mixed oxide (PMO).
Nuclear Free Seas Flotilla 2002 said in a statement today it was unsure which route from Japan to the United Kingdom the PMO-carrying vessel would take.
It was scheduled to leave Japan in early July.
The crews of eight protest boats in the Tasman and Pacific flotilla were preparing in Australia, Vanuatu and New Zealand to be ready if required. A further five boats in the Cape Horn flotilla were also preparing.
"Whichever route the shipment takes to the UK the boat will have to go through the Irish Sea to reach its destination, and there it will be met by a large Irish flotilla," the organisation said.
The PMO was being sent back to the UK after British Nuclear Fuels admitted falsifying critical safety data after the weapons-useable fuel had arrived in Japan.
