Motorist killed in crash on State Highway 2 west of Gisborne

A motorist has died in a crash west of Gisborne, while another person is in a critical condition.

Police confirmed the fatality this morning after a crash on State Highway 2, in Matawhero, about 9.20pm yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the scene after reports of a crash that involved one vehicle.

Police said in a statement that a second person is reported to be a critical condition.

Diversions put in place around the area have since been lifted and the road is now open.

The circumstances of the crash are not yet known and the Police Serious Crash Unit is now investigating.
