A portion of a Christchurch river is under scene guard after a man's body was found.

Christchurch police Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Worner said the man's body was found in the Heathcote River about 7.20pm yesterday.

Worner said police were waiting for the results of a post-mortem examination to be completed to establish the cause of death.

A scene guard was in place until further notice.
