A man and a woman seriously injured in a crash that closed a busy Bay of Plenty highway for several hours today are in a stable condition at Tauranga Hospital.
The two-car crash happened on the Te Puke Highway between the intersections of Welcome Bay Rd and Bell Rd just before 7am.
A Bay of Plenty District Health Board communications spokesman said a 50-year-old Te Puke man and 39-year-old woman from Mount Maunganui were in a hospital ward.
Sergeant Dan Roser of Tauranga police said the female driver of the car and male driver of the ute involved were taken to Tauranga Hospital's emergency department in a serious but stable condition.
There were no passengers or other cars involved. Roser said the crash happened on a bend.
The serious crash unit is investigating the crash and the highway was closed for several hours before it reopened about midday.
Traffic was blocked in both directions at both Bell Rd and Welcome Bay Rd, with a diversion available via Tara Rd and Parton Rd or the Tauranga Eastern Link.
