An alleged bank robber handed himself in to police after a photo of him in his wig-wearing disguise began circulating in the media.

Waikato police Senior Sergeant Charles Burgess said police started receiving calls about the likely alleged offender as soon as the photo was released.

The ASB at The Base Shopping Centre was robbed by a man wearing a black wig, white shirt and dress pants about 12.30pm yesterday.

The 28-year-old man allegedly handed over a note demanding cash and stating that he had a gun.

After being given an undisclosed amount of money he walked to a blue Chevrolet Blazer 4WD and drove off.

Burgess said the man rang police not long after they began fielding calls from the public.

He was arrested at his Te Awamutu home yesterday afternoon and charged with aggravated robbery.

He will appear in the Hamilton District Court this morning.

The money was recovered.
