The teenager who died over the weekend has been called a talented and respected pupil in a tribute from the school he used to attend.
George Jack Hill, 17, was found dead in Timaru's central business district on Sunday.
In a statement on the Timaru Boys' High School Facebook page, the school said it was deeply saddened by George's death.
"The boys, staff, and wider Timaru Boys' community was deeply saddened yesterday when informed that George Hill, a 2017 Year 13 student, died in the weekend.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and other loved ones in this difficult time."
He left behind good friends in the school community, the statement said.
"George was eager to find his way in the world and to do the best he could.
"He was respected among his peers and had a positive outlook on life.
"He got on with everyone."
The statement said George had enjoyed taking part in pipe band drumming and was a talented First XI Football member who showed maturity and natural leadership.
"Timaru Boys' is offering support to boys and staff and working with George's family to help where it can.
"It is sad that such a promising young life has ended."
