A Naenae woman took a bite of her pie only to find a horrifying mystery ingredient - a clump of hair.
Elena Vulu was having an Irvines brand steak and cheese pie from the local dairy. While taking her second bite, she realised something wasn't right.
She saw two small hairs poking out of the gravy.
She thought it could've been a blowfly or a little strand of hair, so she pulled on it a little ... and what she saw made her completely lose her appetite.
"It was a chunk of hair."
Vulu's brother in-law pulled on it further to uncover the size of the mystery chunk, she said she didn't have the stomach for it.
Vulu took to social media to spread awareness of her disgusting discovery.
She said she'd heard the urban myths of mice being found in pies, so whenever her nieces or nephews bought pies she would normally cut them open and inspect the meat before letting them be eaten.
But she's glad the chunk was in her pie rather than a kid's.
Vulu has contacted Irvine Pies' parent company Goodman Fielder.
It is analysing the sample and will get in touch with Vulu once they know for sure what the chunk is.
Vulu said they've said they will offer her vouchers to buy any Goodman Fielder products once everything is cleared up.
She said she won't spend those vouchers on more pies - saying the whole experience has put her off them for a long time.
Vulu said she hopes there will be more care put into making Irvine Pies in the future, and that they check what goes into the pies before selling them so this doesn't happen to anyone else.
Goodman Fielder didn't respond when approached for comment.
