A Hawera man has been arrested following a police pursuit that ended with him crashing into a power box mains, causing chaos in the township.
The 20-year-old driver fled the scene on Matai St in Inglewood around 1.30pm on Monday and was later found at a friend's house in Inglewood, Fairfax reported.
The driver allegedly tried to take a right-hand bend in the township centre, before driving over a kerb and into a power control box on a rail crossing. The car then headed south.
Damage to the power box activated four level rail crossings in the township. Flashing warning lights went on and arm barriers came down at Humphrey, Carrington, Rata and Brookes Streets crossings.
Police told Fairfax the accident caused minimal traffic disruption.
