A spectacular fire that broke out in Wellington Central's Willeston Centre has been contained.

Fire and Emergency said the blaze broke out on the 14th floor of the building, on the corner of Victoria and Willeston Sts just before 9am.

It sent black plumes of smoke billowing over the city.

Police said the building had been cleared and nobody appeared to be injured or unaccounted for.

Cordons are still in place.

Wellington mayor Justin Lester has asked in a tweet that people avoid the area.

He said he could smell smoke from the council offices on Wakefield St.
