A young man from a car that rolled and crashed into a tree, killing his friend, was able to call for help from a nearby property.
Southern fire communications shift manager Andrew Norris said three young men, all aged 19, were in the car that rolled on Coates Rd, which leads to Alexandra Airport, just after midnight.
Two men trapped in the car were cut out by Alexandra volunteer firefighters, but an Alexandra man died at the scene.
The third man, also from Alexandra, suffered minor injuries but managed to go to a nearby property and raise the alarm.
A Ranfurly man suffered critical injuries and is now in Dunedin Hospital's intensive care unit.
