A car has flipped on the Southern Motorway causing long delays for drivers.

The New Zealand Transport Agency has warned people to expect delays because of the crash, which is blocking the left lane southbound between East Tamaki Rd and Redoubt Rd.

Amanda, who drove past the crash, said a red ute was upside down in the outside shoulder and was badly crumpled.

Police, fire fighters and St John ambulance officers were at the scene of the crash.

She said traffic was stopped and was backed up as far as Highbrook Drive.
