Two people have died in two separate crashes overnight; a driver travelling in the Far North and another in a car that collided with a ute in the Hutt Valley.

The driver, travelling alone, died at the scene of a single-car crash on Kaitaia-Awaroa Rd, at 10.15 last night.

Another person died and five others were injured after a car and ute crashed in the Hutt Valley this morning.

The two vehicles collided on the motorway, slightly north of Silverstream, just before 4am.

Police confirmed one person travelling in the car had died, while another had been airlifted in a critical condition to hospital.

Two others also in the car were injured - one seriously, while the other had minor injuries.

The two travelling in the ute suffered moderate to minor injuries.

The northbound lanes remain closed north of Silverstream while emergency services clear the scene.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the Far North crash.
