Men in custody after armed police incident in the North Shore suburb of Birkenhead

Two men have been arrested in an incident tonight involving armed police.

The New Zealand Herald was sent photos tonight of four to six police officers carrying weapons while in Mahara Ave, in the North Shore suburb of Birkenhead.

A police spokesman confirmed police went to the area in response to a vehicle of interest.

The police Eagle helicopter was also used.

"Following inquiries, police located and arrested two males on Mahara Ave. They have been taken in to custody. Charges are yet to be determined."

Inquiries were continuing, the spokesman said.

The Herald asked why police were armed, but no response was received tonight.
