The winners of the biggest Lotto prize ever in New Zealand are looking forward to a low-key Christmas.

The young couple from the Hibiscus Coast, who wish to remain anonymous, won $44 million in the biggest Kiwi Powerball win of all time after buying their ticket at Dairy Flat Food Mart and Liquor north of Auckland.

They said they are looking forward to the Christmas break after a hectic few weeks since their big win in November.

"The last month has been so busy, we're really looking forward to a relaxing, quiet Christmas with friends and family," they said.

Despite their now-bulging bank balance, they resisted the urge to jetset around the globe for a lavish holiday, making their loved ones a priority instead.

"It doesn't really matter how much money we now have - Christmas is all about family. We don't want to jet off overseas when we have the chance to spend some special times with our family and friends."

At the time of their win, the young couple said they had just about given up on being able to buy their first home.

"As soon as I saw I had all the numbers on one line I just yelled 'holy ****!' - my boss thought I'd chopped my arm off with a saw."

The couple said they were regular Lotto players who sometimes play their own numbers and sometimes play with a Dip ticket.

The husband said they had been "busting our guts trying to buy our first home".

In November they said they were determined to make the holidays special for their children.

"All we know at the moment is that we're going to give the kids a really great Christmas this year."

The couple said they would continue to work.

Three New Zealanders have won Powerball in the last two weeks, with 13 people in total taking out the big prize this year.

Auckland had the biggest win, but Dunedin can claim the crown for the luckiest Powerball town in New Zealand, with two $13 million wins within a month of each other.

A couple from Dunedin won $13.3 million in July and then just one month later another Dunedin couple scooped the same amount.

Four Powerball winners bought their tickets online throught the MyLotto website this year.

One of those winners was a young couple from Ashburton who scored themselves more than $22 million in April.
