A woman is dead and a man is charged with her murder after a woman died in Opotiki last night.
Police were called to a Wellington St home last night after reports of a domestic dispute.
Police said they performed CPR on a woman at the address but could not save her.
A homicide investigation has been launched.
A 35-year-old man was due to appear in Whakatane District Court today charged with murder.
Police went to the address at 10:13pm and witnesses reported up to 12 police cars at the house last night and this morning.
Police said a vicious machete attack on a man last night in Opotiki was not connected to the death.
Last night a 39-year-old man was flown by helicopter to hospital with serious leg and arm injuries after he was attacked by a group of men with a machete and steel pipe.
Opotiki Mayor John Forbes said he was disappointed that two violent attacks had occurred in such quick succession in the eastern township.
He said it was "out of character" and highly unusual.
"It's just really disappointing.
"It's a neat little community with a lot of strength."
At this stage he knew very little about the machete attack or the death, but said he was not aware of any trouble in the town recently.
