A fire that was rapidly spreading down a cliff in swanky Auckland suburb St Heliers has been extinguished.

Earlier today, the fire at Achilles Point was rapidly spreading down a cliff face at Achilles Point, in the waterfront East Auckland suburb.

A fire spokeswoman said one crew at the scene was having difficulty extinguishing the blaze, due to it being in a hard to reach location, and had requested backup.

Two other fire engines were heading to the scene.

She said there was no indication that any houses were at risk.

The blaze is in the same location as a 60 sqm grass fire that broke out last night and saw the closure of Cliff Rd.
