Crash blocked SH1 at Paraparaumu, north of Wellington

Three cars have crashed near a rail bridge north of Wellington - causing a backlog of traffic along SH1.

The part of the highway at Paraparaumu was initially blocked in both directions - however, it's since been cleared.

Police are warning motorists to be patient as the backlog clears.

Emergency services attended the crash at 7.15am and police said tow trucks were on their way to clear the scene.

Three people received minor injuries in the crash.
