Police have found a Lower Hutt man who went missing while wearing a hospital gown earlier today.

A spokeswoman confirmed the man, Terauna Poni, was safe and well.

Police in Lower Hutt earlier today had "grave concerns" for Poni's wellbeing.

A police spokeswoman said Poni had been in Lower Hutt hospital because of a health issue and was not wanted by police.

They had said earlier that he is 28 years old, Maori, and believed to be in the Hutt Valley area.

"Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen Mr Poni today or may have information on his whereabouts," police had said in their statement earlier today, when they urged members of the public to "call 111 immediately" if they spotted him.
