A man has died after being thrown from a 4x4 vehicle when it rolled on an off-road track near Makarora, in the Queenstown Lakes District, this afternoon.
The police serious crash unit is investigating the crash which happened at about 3.45pm off the Makarora-Lake Hawea Rd.
Two other people suffered minor injuries and have been taken to a local medical centre.
A fourth person in the vehicle was not injured.
St John Ambulance spokesman Ian Henderson said the incident was still in progress due to the remote location.
The Otago rescue helicopter with St John paramedics on board and an ambulance are in attendance.
Meanwhile, an 11-year-old girl is in a critical condition after a crash at Thompsons Crossing, north of Invercargill, this afternoon.
The girl was riding a 50cc motorcycle out of a paddock when she collided with a car on Thompsons Crossing Road West, shortly before 2.30pm.
She was taken to Invercargill Hospital with serious head and leg injuries.
The rural road was closed for a short time while the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene, but has since been reopened. Police are investigating.
