A petition has been launched to reverse a decision to turn the 18-hole Chamberlain Park golf course into a nine-hole course.

Carving up the 75-year-old public course will have a major effect on Aucklanders who play on the course, said one of the petition organisers Richard Quince.

He said the Albert-Eden Local Board's decision to redevelop the course will cost up to $13.4 million, more if an aquatic centre on the park goes ahead.

Mt Albert's Chamberlain Park is one of only two public golf courses in Auckland and about 50,000 rounds of golf are played there each year, Quince said.

"With the proposed intensification under the Unitary Plan, the importance of a well-located resource like Chamberlain Park can only increase," he said.

The petition organisers are asking mayoral and Albert-Eden Local Board candidates to state their position on the park.

They plan to present the petition to the new mayor and local board after October's local body elections.
