Motorists are facing a slow journey into the city today as wet weather and back-to-school traffic cause havoc on the roads.

Those travelling from Drury face a sitting nearly one and half hours in the car to get into the CBD.

It's not quite as long but it's a slow 40-minute journey from Greville Rd to the Fanshawe St off-ramp.

The north-western motorway is steadily improving with the journey taking just under half an hour to get from Lincoln Rd into the city. Earlier this morning motorists faced an hour-long commute on the same stretch of highway.

An NZTA spokeswoman said traffic was heavy this morning and there had been a couple of incidents slowing things down.

"We ask motorists to increase their following distances and allow plenty of time for their journeys," she said.
