Two supermarket workers in Lower Hutt were hit over the head by a gun-wielding robber this morning.

The New World employees were injured by an armed man who entered the supermarket about 6.40am today.

It remains unclear if any money was stolen.

A second offender was seen waiting in the car park for the armed man.

The offender with the gun is described as a male Maori or Polynesian of medium build wearing a black beanie and white painter's overalls.

The other man is described as Maori or Polynesian, also wearing a black beanie but with black fabric covering his face. He was also wearing white overalls, which had sleeves.

He's described as being about 30 years old and about 172cm tall.
