Police are still hunting for a man who snuck into a woman's home and attacked her with a hooked pole at the weekend.

The 23-year-old victim is still in Waikato Hospital where she underwent surgery following the attack in Hamilton on Sunday night.

Neighbours told reporters they heard screams as the man attacked her, chased her outside and attacked her again.

The man, who the victim told police attacked her inside her Edgecumbe St home about 11.30pm, was said to be wearing a black balaclava and black hooded sweatshirt with a white face, skull-head pattern on the back of it.

"Police are still investigating a number of lines of inquiry about the Edgecumbe St attack and we ask anyone to come forward if they heard or saw the assault."
