The name of a man killed while hunting with a friend yesterday evening in Central Otago has been released by police.
The 61-year-old Cromwell man was Gary John Tall who died while out hunting on the Old Woman Range, near Cromwell.
Initial indications are that Mr Tall was alone and that his weapon discharged accidentally striking him in the abdomen area.
His death is not believed to be suspicious.
Mr Tall's family and hunting companion have been referred to victim support.
A karakia will take place once the scene has been examined by police.
Police say emergency services were alerted to the accident shortly before midnight.
Ambulance and police officers performed CPR on Mr Tall but were unable to revive him.
