Police are on the hunt for a "sexually motivated intruder" after an incident at an Auckland apartment complex this week.

The alleged offender followed a woman into a Queen St apartment building in Auckland central about 5am on Thursday.

After interacting with the offender, the woman went into her apartment but was later confronted again.

Police say the offender gained access to the victim's apartment and only fled when she alerted her flatmate a short time later.

Police are wanting to speak to the man in the supplied photograph.

Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Baldwin said it was important that police identify and speak with the man as soon as possible.

Mr Baldwin said that people living in apartments in the city should be aware of "tail-gaters" - people entering apartment buildings behind others without the appropriate access cards or keys.

He said any suspicious behaviour should be reported to police.
