Police and fire crews are at the scene of what is believed to be a body in a burning car in Marlborough this morning.

Firefighters were called to a burning car on State Highway 1 near the weigh-bridge at Tuamarina around 8.30am, Jill Higgison from the Fire Service southern communications centre said.

She declined to comment on the nature of the fire, referring all queries to police.

The Herald understands a body has been found in the burning car, however this is unconfirmed at this stage.

Police have refused to provide further details about the blaze, reports of a body being found inside, or whether the fire is suspicious.

However, they reportedly told Mediaworks the area where the car was on fire was a "crime scene".

In a statement police said they were investigating the fire, after the Toyota Corolla station wagon was found burning in a layby this morning.

Tasman police district spokeswoman Barbara Dunn said, "all I can say is that it's unexplained."
