An avid runner from Christchurch has been named as the woman killed in the Deception Valley on Sunday.

Isabel Frances Rivett (nee Jones), 32, has been named as the woman who died in the mountain running tragedy near Otira, West Coast.

Police said Ms Rivett, a keen runner, was among a party of five who were about 3km up Deception Valley towards Goat Pass.

They had been attempting to make their third crossing of the Deception River when Ms Rivett was swept downstream.

She was found about 1km away. Emergency services were called as her friends tried desperately to revive her, but she could not be saved.

Tributes to the young woman have been shared on social networking sites, including on Facebook.

Anthony Jones posted a photo with the message: "Love you and miss you forever, Iz."
