A magnitude 4.5 earthquake has been recorded west of the Cook Strait.
It was detected at 7.50am at a depth of 55 kilometres, 50km north-east of French Pass.
GeoNet reported that the quake was "likely felt."
Some took to Twitter after the quake was felt in parts of Wellington and as far north as Ohakune.

"Bit of a wobble there in Wellington," Mandy Simpson said, while Innovative Partnership write "wobbly in Ohakune this morning."
And at 10.05am a second quake 60km south of Hokitika of "moderate intensity" shook the Southern Alps, Canterbury and Westland.
The earthquake was 4.2 magnitude and 13km deep.
