A man has been killed by a falling tree in Northland as ferocious thunder storms and lightning strikes bore down on Auckland and the upper North Island.
Police said the falling tree incident happened about 4pm today on a farm at Tinopai, Northland.
A man was found with injuries under the tree but had since died.
Northern Communications Centre Inspector Kerry Watson said it was unclear if the death was weather-related and no further information was available tonight.
But it came during a severe weather event which sparked thunderstorm warning across the upper North Island and saw torrential rain, lightning and hail pound Auckland and Northland.
