A Wellington man faces multiple driving charges following a police pursuit along a northern Wellington beach this morning.
Police said they attempted to stop a Honda CRV motor vehicle that was travelling south on State Highway 1 in Otaki about 10.35am.
However, the driver failed to stop and allegedly increased his speed to escape from police.
Police said while the vehicle on SH1, the offending driver overtook several vehicles and reached speeds of approximately 150 km/h. The vehicle then turned off SH1 and drove west on Peka Peka Rd towards the coast.
Police said they continued to pursue the vehicle, which eventually ended up on foreshore, travelling north along Peka Peka beach.
The pursuit continued along the beach until police abandoned the pursuit due to the "increasingly difficult terrain".
The driver of the vehicle drove onto a gravel road in Te Horo before abandoning the vehicle and attempting to escape on foot.
After a brief foot chase the driver of the fleeing vehicle was caught, and police checks revealed the driver's car was stolen.
A 40-year-old local man has been bailed to appear in the Levin District Court where he will face multiple driving charges in relation to the incident, police said.
