A hospital patient is in a critical condition after being hit by two cars outside a Wellington hospital this afternoon.

The man was a patient at Kenepuru Community Hospital in Porirua, and was hit by two cars on Raiha St after walking from the grounds around 1pm.

He was a patient in a non-secure rehabilitation unit, and was "free to walk around the campus", a Capital and Coast District Health Board spokeswoman said.

He was now in a critical condition in the intensive care unit at Wellington Hospital, she said.

The patient appeared to have walked out in front of the cars, police said.

"He was jumping out in front of traffic, got hit by a couple of cars," acting senior sergeant Gordon Russell of the Wellington district command centre said.

The DHB would investigate the incident, the spokeswoman said.
