An injured horse on the side of a busy Auckland road had injured its leg after jumping a fence.
This morning police reported a car had hit the horse on Kepa Road, but St Heliers Bay Pony Club president Andy Parker has since established this was not case.
"There was no car involved," he said.
"A horse has jumped an internal fence and it has broken its leg."
He said the injured horse then fell through another fence and ended up on the roadside.
"It was a tragic accident," he said.
Police and the Fire Service closed a section of Kepa Road near the intersection with Orakei Road when they were called to the scene.
The horse was in pain, Mr Parker said, and the decision was made between the owner of the horse, police and the SPCA to euthanise the horse.
