A multiple-vehicle crash has closed one of Christchurch's main roads.
Emergency services are at the scene on SHW1 Main South Road, just south of Marshs Road at Templeton.
The road is closed in both directions and detours will be in place, police said.
Motorists were advised to use Waterloo Road in the meantime.
Further north, sump oil has spilt onto a state highway in Waikato, and police say it could be hazardous to other motorists.
Drivers travelling on State Highway 25A between Kopu and Hikuai are being advised to take care after a car struck a large rock on the road, and oil from the damaged sump spilled onto the highway.
Contractors were on the way to the scene near the summit to clean the road but until that was done the road would be slippery, police said.
