A teenager who was killed when he was struck by a train outside Christchurch yesterday has been named as Jayden John Smith.

The 16-year-old from Christchurch was hit by at a railway crossing on Factory Rd, close to Belfast, about 8.50pm.

He had been walking with friends at the time.

Jayden's two friends - a boy and a girl - crossed the railway line, but he was struck by a northbound freight train, Detective Sergeant Richard Quested said earlier.

Enquiries into his death have continued today, including interviewing witnesses and the friends who were with him.

Officers are satisfied there are no suspicious circumstances around the death, which will be referred to the coroner, Mr Quested said.
