Police say a man who was holed up inside a Taupo house and believed to have had access to a firearm is now in custody.

At 9.30pm last night a woman turned up at a police station to report a domestic assault, leading police to try to make contact with a man in the house on Rangitera Street, Taupo.

The Armed Offenders Squad was called following information the man had access to a firearm.

Police say the man, in his 30s, was refusing to leave the house and there were concerns for his state of mind.

Cordons had been set up around the house and police were negotiating with the man.

A short while ago police say the man left the house without issue and was taken into custody.
