A head-on crash on one of New Zealand's deadliest stretches of road has left a passenger in a car dead and a truck driver in hospital.

The vehicles collided on State Highway 2 at Mangatawhiri in northern Waikato just before 5.20pm.

Emergency services are still at the scene and the crash is being investigated by the Police Serious Crash Unit.

Diversions are in place at the intersections of Kopuku Rd and SH2 and Coalfields Rd and SH2.

There have been more than 200 crashes causing 43 deaths in the area in the past decade, according to the New Zealand Transport Agency.
