Two men have been arrested following the death of a 27-year-old Lower Hutt man last night.
Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Cooper said police were called to a Stokes Valley around 9pm after reports of fighting.
"Upon our arrival, at the corner of George and Logie streets, bystanders were performing first aid on the 27-year-old victim. He was transported soon after to Hutt Hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later."
Mr Cooper said a post-mortem examination on the body of the dead man will be carried out today, however it appears he suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest.
He said two men, a 20-year-old and a 22-year-old turned themselves in at the Lower Hutt Police Station and have been charged with common assault.
They are due to appear in Lower Hutt District Court today. Further charges are possible.
Police are investigating the connections between the 27-year-old and the two men who have been charged.
"At this stage we are beginning to piece together the events which led to this man's death last night and we are appealing to anyone that was in the area of George and Logie Street to contact Police if they saw or heard anything suspicious last night."
