Thinking of getting a dog?
It's probably best to stay clear of the name Max or Bella, as hundreds of pups in Auckland already have these names.
Auckland Council dog registration records in the past year show Bella and Max are the favourite monikers for many dog owners in Auckland.
Records show there are 99,612 known dogs in the city.
This year is the first time all pups in the region will be registered to one council.
A total of 786 pups were christened Bella or Belle and 750 went by the name Max.
Other name favourites were Jack, Oscar, Charlie, Rocky, Toby, Mollie and Jess or Jessie.
Curiously, those were also the top names in last year's Auckland City registration records; with 300 dogs called Max and 288 named Bella.
And it may be the result of Rugby World Cup fever, but other names popping up in this year's intake of registrations include Jonah Lomu and Carlos Spencer.
Cricketer Brendon McCullum is also featured on the list, and those dog owners keen on the drink dubbed their canine friends Guinness or Jim Beam.
Some of the quirkier names registered include dot.com and email.
Last year's list also included Darth Vadar, Fox Mulder and Dora the Explorer.
